Iain Oughtred designed Seahorse Skiff, “BUNG” (ask the seller why!).
A wooden, flat-bottomed, centreboard sailing skiff 15’2” long by 4’8” beam (4.62m by 1.42m), self-built by the current owner, from purchased plans. Built of marine grade hardwood ply, hoop pine, teak and WRC, bonded and sealed using West System epoxy (glass-fibre sheathed on bottom) and finished with International marine paint (white) and spar varnish, all materials supplied by Duck Flat. Launched January 2020.
The builder chose the optional lapstrake topside construction and curved stem from the plans and further improved the interior arrangements to his own design, including the addition of removable sole boards made from recycled teak. The fore- and after-decks are enclosed buoyancy compartments with spin-out inspection ports.
Hull exterior and interior is finished gloss white with decks, seats, spars and gunwales clear finished.
The rig is a boomless, tan, sprit sail of 78 sq.ft. area (7.25 sq.m), two reef points, on an unstayed mast. Running rigging is all Spectra lines for halyard, sheet and snotter, with VB chord for the brail line.
The boat comes with a pair of 8-foot sweeps, anchor, chain and rode, fore and aft painters, sail bag and bailer, and sits on a Carlex steel galvanised “Easy Trailer” with lights, jockey wheel, spare wheel and tyre and a current Rego. (to 22/05/2025). There is a custom made, waterproofed, black canvas cover for the boat (can be left on for towing). No engine.
This is a very attractive boat, light and quite fast. It is easily rowed, too, due to its relatively narrow lines.
Ideal for 1, 2 or 3 adults or a family with 2 small children. As the owner was slow in starting the build, his two children were practically men by the time it was launched, and as the family liked sailing together, it has been usurped by a bigger boat, and the time has come to move it on.
It is in very good, well-maintained condition and is ready to sail. It will be missed.
If interested, the seller is happy to pass on the plans with the boat.
